Where flowers bloom, so does hope. Lady Bird Johnson
Roses have called planet earth home for 35 million years. The oldest known rose fossils were found in Florissant, Colorado in 1874. This fossil was named Rosa hillae after Charlotte Hill, a 19th-century paleontologist who made significant fossil discoveries in the renowned Florissant Fossil Beds.
Today, there are more than 300 species and 30,000 cultivated varieties of roses. One of the world’s most beloved flowers, roses are also essential partners to many pollinators. The blossoms provide a rich source of pollen to honey bees, butterflies and other species—especially varieties with open centers where the stamens are more accessible.
